How this is calculated

The calculator works around the room: the perimeter is 2 x (length + width), and the number of strips is the perimeter divided by the roll width, rounded up. A standard UK roll is about 10.05 m long and 53 cm wide, but always check the roll size on the label and enter it if yours differs.

Each strip, or drop, needs to be the wall height plus the pattern repeat plus a trim allowance, because pattern repeat adds waste on each drop as the pattern is matched. The number of drops per roll is the roll length divided by the drop length, rounded down, and the rolls needed are the strips divided by the drops per roll, rounded up.

Doors and windows are deliberately not deducted, because patterns must still match around them and it is safer to over-order. Buy all rolls from the same batch number so the colour and pattern match exactly.

  • Openings are not deducted: patterns must still match around them and it is safer to over-order.
  • Buy all rolls from the same batch number.
  • Always check the roll size on the label.

Frequently asked questions

What size is a standard roll of wallpaper?

About 10.05 m long and 53 cm wide in the UK, but sizes vary, so always check the roll size on the label.

Why aren't doors and windows deducted?

Patterns must still match around openings, so the waste is less than you might expect, and it is safer to over-order.

What is pattern repeat?

The distance before the pattern repeats down the roll. Each drop must start at the same point in the pattern, which adds waste on every strip.
