Brick and block calculator
Enter the wall length and height in metres, deduct any openings, pick the wall type and see how many bricks or blocks to order.
Estimates only. Check the manufacturer's coverage rates.
How this is calculated
The calculator works out the net wall area first: length x height, minus any door and window openings you enter. A 10 m wall at 2.4 m high is 24 m² before openings.
It then multiplies by the number of units per square metre. The figures assume 10 mm mortar joints and stretcher bond. A UK standard brick is 215 x 102.5 x 65 mm, which works out at 59.26 bricks per m² for a single skin (half-brick) wall; a double skin (one-brick) wall needs twice that. A standard concrete block with a 440 x 215 mm face works out at 9.877 blocks per m². The block count per m² depends on the face size, not the block thickness.
A wastage allowance, 5% by default, is added for cuts and breakages, and the result is rounded up to a whole unit.
Mortar and wall ties are not included. Deduct door and window openings with the openings box. Bricks and blocks are bought in packs, so check pack sizes before ordering.
