EV range calculator

Range is battery energy multiplied by efficiency. Use the usable battery size in kWh (often a little less than the headline figure) and your car's miles per kWh. Cold weather, motorway speeds and heating all reduce real-world range, so there is an adjustment box.

Illustrative adjustments:

Range (miles)210
Range (km)338

How it works

range (miles) = usable battery kWh x miles per kWh x (1 - adjustment %)

Miles come from energy times efficiency. The adjustment lowers the result to allow for conditions that use more energy than your baseline figure.

Worked example

60 kWh x 3.5 miles per kWh = 210 miles (338 km). With a 20% cold-weather adjustment: 60 x 3.5 x 0.8 = 168 miles.

Frequently asked questions

How far will a 75 kWh battery go?

At 3.5 miles per kWh, a 75 kWh battery gives about 262 miles; at 4 miles per kWh, 300 miles.

How much does cold weather reduce EV range?

It varies with the car and how you drive, but a loss of 20% or more in freezing conditions is common because of battery chemistry and cabin heating. Use the adjustment box to see the effect.

Does motorway driving reduce range?

Yes. Energy use rises quickly with speed because of air resistance, so motorway driving usually gives fewer miles per kWh than town driving.

What is usable versus gross battery capacity?

Gross capacity is the total the battery holds; usable capacity is the part the car lets you use. Range calculations should use usable capacity.
