kWh to miles converter for electric cars
A kilowatt-hour (kWh) is a unit of energy, and an electric car's battery is rated in it. How many miles one kWh gives you is the car's efficiency. Most modern electric cars manage roughly 3 to 4.5 miles per kWh in mixed driving, but your own figure is the one that matters.
Enter your efficiency in miles per kWh (your car's trip computer or charging app usually shows it) and the converter works both ways.
60 kWh at 3.5 miles per kWh = 210 miles
How it works
miles = kWh x miles per kWh
Multiply the energy in kWh by your efficiency in miles per kWh. To go the other way, divide the miles by your efficiency to get kWh.
Worked example
- 60 kWh x 3.5 = 210 miles.
- 200 miles / 3.5 = 57.14 kWh.
Frequently asked questions
How many miles is 1 kWh in an electric car?
It depends on the car, speed and weather. Roughly 3 to 4.5 miles per kWh is typical for modern electric cars in mixed driving, so 1 kWh is about 3 to 4.5 miles. Check your car's trip computer for your own figure.
How many miles does a 60 kWh battery give?
At 3.5 miles per kWh, a 60 kWh battery gives 210 miles. At 4 miles per kWh it gives 240 miles. Usable capacity is often a little lower than the headline battery size.
Is kWh the same as kW?
No. kW measures power (how fast energy flows) and kWh measures energy (how much). See the kW vs kWh explainer.
Why does my real-world mileage differ from the official figure?
Official range figures come from lab tests. Motorway speeds, cold weather, heating, tyres and hills all increase energy use, so real-world miles per kWh is often lower.
